Can regular sewing thread cause infection if it deep under the skin for a week or two?
If its not sterile, yes. Did you give yourself an at home stitch up?
Reply:Yes for sure!
Reply:Especially if it is colored.
Reply:Definitely can. Sewing thread is very different from sterile surgical sutures. If you have thread in you (how on earth did that happen, anyway?) please go to the doctor for antibiotics and to have it taken care of.
Reply:The thread itself probably won't, as surgeons use similar thread and surgeries. But, any item under the skin can carry bacteria. There's a chance, just as a chance of dying in a plain crash. Pretty much, you should be fine.
Reply:YES!
Reply:yes, anything that is not sterilzed that is put into your body thru the skin, as opposed to swallowing or other openings, can cause infection. If the area around where the thread is located you have at least an inflamation if not an infection. Either way it needs to be removed. Depending on how deep it is and your pain tolerance this may be done at home. If this is a child, Dr office probably a better idea. If an adult, how much thread and how deep matters, can you see it?? If you can see it you probably can sterilize a needle like granny would have done, you can use heat, a match, the stove burner.... or soak in rubbing alcohol or lysol something to kill the germs on the needle, and poke and prod a little and see if you can dislodge the thread, if you get it out, soak area in something antiseptic as warm as you can stand for about 20 min. if is swollen or sore still, soak up to 3 or 4 times a day in the solution of your choice, I use 1 tbs lysol liquid to 2 quarts water, this is just my preference. ALL of this suggestion is only if the thread is in hand or foot or close to and you are not Diabetic. If this thread is close to face or any "personal" area, see a Doc, if you are diabetic see a Doc, if you have any auto immune disorder see a Doc. Use your own common sense as to whether to do it your self but do get the thread out. I am counting on your commonsense to kick in and know if the situation is one that should be handled with advice from granny or see a Doc....
