I injured my leg on March 29th %26amp; ended up in hospital. After the vast purple bruise faded from my calf, a 4" X 6" area remained red %26amp; turned hard as leather. I had no feeling in the skin but deep inside, the pain was about a 7 out of 10. I went back to emerg %26amp; they said it was cellulitis %26amp; gave me antibiotics. 7 days later, the infection was still there. So Emerg gave me clyndamicin %26amp; I broke out in a horrible painful rash 2 days later.
Back to Emerg. They gave me gloxi-something next but it's all used up now %26amp; the infection is better looking but STILL not gone yet! I'm wondering if I should see a specialist.
I'm afraid to go to the hospital again because I'm worried about catching a worse virus like C dificile or necrotizing faciitis. My infection is still the same size, has turned a sort of pinkish brown now %26amp; hurts all day still. (About a 6 out of 10 pain).
What kind of doctor could help me with this stubborn cellulitis? I need a specialist, I think.
What doctor should I see about my skin infection?
Get thee to a DERMATOLOGIST -- ASAP !!!!!
Go to WEB-MD on net, they have a space where you can locate a doctor in your area!!! Also, call your state medical board %26amp; ask for referral or better yet your family doc can reccommend a good DERMATOLOGIST!!! Make sure you tell the doctor's receptionist that you have a VERY SERIOUS MEDICAL, PERHAPS SURGICAL SKIN DAMAGE and ask her if the doctor handles that type of thing (some only do pimples and dermabration) -- so make yourself very clear on the phone %26amp; best of all fax a couple of these doctors your hospital records and then they'll have an idea of what you need and if they can handle it!!! (Everyone should have a home fax for just this type of thing %26amp; also for legal problems you may need to fax things or recieve faxes --- a good Panasonic fax machine can be had for $40 !!! It will pay for itself many times over -- you can fax with PC too if you have scanner).
However, you NEED to find a good doctor ASAP !!! You can also call a pharmacy, esp. one in a high-end neighborhood -- they are usually more willing to help and more knowledgable), ask the pharmacist who is one of the best dermatologists in town (make sure to tell him it is for severe medical reasons %26amp; explain). You may get your best %26amp; quickest answer from the pharmacist !!! Do this NOW, this is very serious skin damage !!! You dont want it to turn for the worse. Infections can go gangrenous quickly -- so do not delay !!!
Reply:go to a different er ASAP--if this infection spreads you can become septic. also it appears from the description you gave that you are actively infected--after failed outpatient oral antibiotics you need to go inpatient on Iv antibiotics--levaquin or vancomycin will be started--you need to go asap--i am a doctor
Reply:For all things skin related, see your dermatologist. However the nature of your injury is of vital importance. Did you cut it? Bruise it? Be sure to tell the dermatologist everything. BTW, if the infection is still the same size don't worry about necrotising fasciitis.
Reply:Dermatologist probably
Reply:You need surgery and debridement . It looks like at least part of the tissue is dead . I am seriously wondering about the quality of healthcare you have .
Reply:Dermatologist.
