Are TB (Mantoux) skin tests painful, as in, are they deep injections?

Thanks!

Are TB (Mantoux) skin tests painful, as in, are they deep injections?
There is some slight burning at the site when it is first done but in no way is it really "painful", and it is just right below the first layer of skin, so shallow that when they inject they liquid it leaves a bubble
Reply:They are ID, or intradermal. So they are just into the top layer of skin.

Not painful at all.
Reply:we used to do them at the puncture center where i worked. these are intradermal injections (not in the veins). the dosis injected is not a lot (maybe 0.5 mL). its injected just underneath the skin. you need to have it 'read' 48-72 hours later. a lump over 5 mm means that you have been in contact with mycobaterium tuberculosis (vaccine, or relative having the bacteria or u have the disease but its not active (or it is)).

so basically, its not painfull but if you don't like needles, don't look and all will be fine.

good luck.
