My hamster won't stop biting me. and it's digging into my skin. Help?

He didn't use to do this! He use to be really tame and friendly, now whenever i hold him he bites, and its hard, he bites me and holds on and it digs deep into my skin. How do i make him stop?

Also, he has moments wheres he's really hyper, then he stops and goes to sleep... I don't know what to do.. Help!

My hamster won't stop biting me. and it's digging into my skin. Help?
Suggestion: stop picking him up. Hamsters can be very feisty, especially the males, as they get older.

god bless
Reply:Maybe you should take him to the vet? Maybe it's a physical problem that has caused his change in behavior. Use thick leather gloves when handling him until the problem is solved.
Reply:o nasty

Well it could be the hamster is being clever it has learned if i bite, you will let go of me.lol

do you have the smell of food or any other animals on you hand that could be scaring him?

Has he been handled ruffly in the past?

You could start again and kind or re tame him. start by not holding him for a while n give him treats on your hand let him get to know you again and trust you. and let him walk on your hand and hen get hold of him.

Make sure that you are handling him correctly hun.

MOST IMPORTANT i believe animals can sense when you are scared so try not to act worried that he is going to bite. i know that is hard because it really hurts when they bite and obviously you don't want it to happen again.

hope this helps x and good luck
Reply:This also happened to my hamster! I started all over again! Your have to leave him in the cage and then quite often go over to the cage and just stroke his back. When you feel a bit more confident with him start stroking right down from his head to his bum. When you are able to do this without him turning round and trying to bite you take him out of his cage and place him on a flat surface (where he cannot escape) and just gently stroke him and practise picking him up, stroking him then putting him down. Then you should be able to have a happy hamster! PS: Allways keep a bit of food with you whilst holding him so if he bites you, you can distract him from your hand to the food!
Reply:I agree with Libi. You need to start over. However, the worst thing you can do is stop giving him touch and attention altogether. If you do, they will get more mean and not want you to ever touch them. They need human touch. But also, make sure you are doing this later in the evening. They are nocturnal and maybe you're bothering him when he's tired. Don't give up. It'll get better. The vet suggestion may be a good idea if you are wanting to send that kind of money. It really depends on the individual and how far we are willing to go for our pets, financially. Sometimes, it's not necessary and others the vet is unaffordable or reasonable for a $7 hampster. Don't take that as against animals or that I think the cost is comparable to how much we love them. I was just speaking of some practical thinking for some. Good Luck to you.
